Instrumentally Miles

This work was inspired by the legacy, sophistication, and creative brilliance of Black jazz musicians and the trumpet’s unmistakable place in jazz history. Rather than simply painting a musician performing, I wanted to capture a moment of intense concentration and connection between the artist and his instrument. The trumpet positioned directly in front of the face becomes part of the portrait itself, symbolizing how closely a musician’s identity and personal voice can become intertwined with the music.

I hope viewers are immediately drawn to the musician’s eyes and direct gaze. Although much of his face is divided and partially concealed by the trumpet, his eyes remain powerful and expressive. I want viewers to imagine what he might be thinking and, even in the silence of a painting, almost hear the first notes of the trumpet.

I also want the work to encourage reflection on the enormous influence Black musicians have had on jazz and American culture. There is a sense of dignity, confidence, elegance, and individuality in the figure that celebrates the musician as both artist and storyteller.
