This work was inspired by the elegance, strength, and enduring legacy of Black women in jazz and blues, particularly the iconic presence associated with singers such as Billie Holiday. The flowers in her hair, vintage microphone, pearls, and poised expression reference an era when Black women used their voices to communicate love, heartbreak, resistance, and lived experience. I wanted to honor not only the music, but the women whose voices helped shape American culture.

I hope viewers feel a sense of strength, beauty, longing, and reflection. Her upward gaze suggests that she is reaching for something beyond the immediate moment, while the microphone represents the power of having a voice and using it.

I also want viewers to think about the stories behind the music. Many of these women transformed deeply personal experiences into songs that became universal. I want the viewer to imagine hearing her voice and to consider how music can preserve memory, history, pain, resilience, and joy across generations.
